Israel - 12th Century BC. The Israelites are now in the Promised Land. They have gone through the cycle of falling into sin > Being punished by God > Repentance > and Coming back to God.
The Israelites were in serious crisis. The massive army of the King of Canaan was at their door. With a well-trained army and 900 iron chariots, Israel was no match for them. But they had a secret weapon...a woman named Deborah.
Deborah is one of the 12 judges who helped turn this nation's heart towards God and deliver them. First- a woman judge in those times was extremely rare, but Deborah was a good one! She held court under a tree and the people of Israel would seek her out as a fair judge to settle their disputes.
When news of Jabin's army came in, Deborah recruited General Barak. (Does that name sound familiar? It should! The US has a president that was named after this General.) General Barak was reluctant at first to go into battle, but said he would if Deborah would go with him. "If you go with me, I will go; but if you don't go with me, I won't go." Vs. 8
Deborah chose a strategic day for battle. First, it was a rainy day- which would bog down the iron chariots. Second, her army took the high ground- again, a strategic move because the chariots got stuck in the mud and were useless in climbing Mount Tabor.
In our day and age, a female leading a general's army would be rare, but imagine it in 12th Century BC! There must have been something extremely convincing about Deborah's ability to command an army!
Peter was one of the 12 apostles. When something needed to be said, Peter usually spoke up first. When something needed NOT to be said, Peter usually spoke up first! But not only was he the first to SPEAK UP, he was also the first to ACT UP! He was always quick to jump into action!
Activators are movers and shakers. They create momentum, and bring a catalytic sense of urgency. Sometimes Activators can be impulsive. Part of the basement of Activator is it can sometimes be quick in the wrong way. Peter needed to learn to look before leaping- and so do we!
One moment in Peter's life where Activator was in full motion was when he walked on water! Matthew 14:24-33 tells the story of Peter jumping at the chance to walk on water when he saw Jesus.
People who are especially talented in the Belief theme have certain core values that are unchanging. Out of these values emerges a defined purpose for their life.
Elijah the Prophet.
The prophet Elijah urged the people of ancient Israel to turn from their sin and return to the true God. He is best known as a man of prayer. James uses Elijah as an example of prayer in James 5:16 "Then pray for each other. Do this so that God can heal you. Anyone who lives the way God wants can pray, and great things will happen.17 Elijah was a person just like us. He prayed that it would not rain. And it did not rain on the land for three and a half years!"
Elijah had such intense Belief that he boldly went into the wicket King Ahab's palace and pronounced judgement that it would not rain until he gave the word! And it doesn't rain for 3 1/2 years!
Elijah's Belief allowed him to be a bold, direct-to-the-point prophet of God. And by speaking prophecies of God- he made fierce enemies!
Hie greatest miracle involved a contest with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah on Mount Carmel. Elijah called on God and God sent fire to swallow up the sacrifice he prepared.
History always repeats itself. We still have our "Ahabs" and "Jezebels." Our culture has its idolatry...though more subtle than in Elijah's day.
And we still need men and women of God to boldly declare God's message of hope to a dying world. We need men and women of strong Belief to pray!
